Collector's Bio

I am a left-handed golfer who, like many baby boomers, collected trading cards growing up.  While introducing my son and nephews to sports cards in the early 2000s, I decided to take a swing at collecting golf cards.  Because nobody cared about golf cards, they produced some very cool and attractive cards with numbering, signatures, and game-used fabrics.  They are art.

I took an instant liking to the Phil cards (from one lefty to another) and tried to amass the full collection, but it wasn’t easy.  The only checklists available were at the back of the Beckett Baseball Guides, and the data was not accurate.

It was confusing to sort out, and the Fairway Fabrics collection was the biggest challenge.  There was the black fabric with the black shirt, then the black fabric with the blue shirt, the gold fabric with blue shirt, and the double gold fabric with fellow lefty, Mike Weir.  The SP Authentic series was not quite as challenging with a #799, #100, and #25.  And my favorite Front 9 Fabric cards were a fun puzzle to solve.  This collection had singles, doubles, triples, and quads – all with different numbering, some with autographs, and two different twosomes (one with Sergio and one with Jesper Parnevic).  It was dizzying and challenging, but we got it done.

After being burned a couple of times, I learned to only buy graded cards on eBay.  When this Phil 1 of 2 was listed on eBay, it was raw (ungraded)…and not cheap.  Rules were meant to be broken, and the understanding of scarcity drove the purchase.  I sweat the process for years, and finally sent in the card for a PSA Authentication.

This #/100 card was what set-off the addiction.  This card had it all: the jersey, the #/100, and the classic lefty signature.  The PSA 10 helped.  The rest is history.  You know how addictions go, and the lack of good info in the space and scarcity through the collection only amplified the challenge.  The Front 9 Fabric collection is a fun one!

The Foursomes is a favorite (with Bernard Langer, Sergio, and Jack), and it is only numbered to ten…and I have two of these.
